Enter your package dimensions and weight to see exactly which surcharges UPS or FedEx will add to your base rate. Covers Additional Handling, Large Package, Oversize, cubic volume triggers, Residential Delivery, and the August 2025 dimension rounding rule. Free, no signup required.
💡 New in Aug 2025: UPS and FedEx now round every fractional inch up to the nearest whole inch before calculating DIM weight. A 12.2" package counts as 13". This calculator applies that rule automatically and flags when it changes your result.

This tool checks surcharges. To calculate your exact billable weight across all four carriers, use the dedicated DIM weight calculator.
Open DIM Weight Calculator →UPS and FedEx base rates are just the starting point. Both carriers layer surcharges on top that can double or triple your expected cost — and most shippers only discover them when the invoice arrives after delivery. The most common culprits are Additional Handling (triggered by size or weight thresholds), Large Package fees, and the lesser-known cubic volume surcharge that catches large, light packages.
Since August 2025, both carriers also round every fractional dimension up to the nearest whole inch before calculating DIM weight. A package that measured 12.2" in one dimension now counts as 13". Over three dimensions, this rounding can push you over Additional Handling thresholds you wouldn't otherwise hit.
| Surcharge | Triggers When... | Est. Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Additional Handling — Size | Longest side > 48", or 2nd longest > 30" | $13–$20+ |
| Additional Handling — Weight | Actual weight > 50 lbs | $13–$20+ |
| Additional Handling — Cubic | Volume > 10,368 in³ AND weight < 10 lbs | $13–$20+ |
| Large Package | Longest side > 96", or girth + length > 130" | $90–$160+ |
| Oversize / May Be Refused | Longest > 108", girth + length > 165", or weight > 150 lbs | $800+ |
| Residential Delivery | All deliveries to home addresses | $5–$7 |
Run this calculator before finalising packaging. Keeping the longest side under 48" and the second-longest under 30" avoids Additional Handling entirely.
Since August 2025, carriers round each dimension up. A box at 48.1" in its longest side now counts as 49" and triggers Additional Handling. Design packaging with whole-inch headroom.
Packages over 50 lbs trigger weight-based Additional Handling. Where possible, split into two packages under 50 lbs each to avoid the fee entirely.
Residential Delivery fees are $5–$7 per package. For B2B shipments, always confirm you're using a commercial address to avoid this automatic surcharge.
If your package would trigger a Large Package or Oversize fee, LTL freight is often cheaper. Use our Freight Class Calculator to compare.
Carriers add surcharges after the base rate. The most common culprits are Additional Handling (triggered when any side exceeds 48" or weight exceeds 50 lbs), DIM weight charges when your package is light but bulky, and Residential Delivery fees. Carriers also remeasure packages in transit — if their scan shows a larger size than declared, they'll adjust the bill accordingly.
Starting August 2025, UPS and FedEx round each package dimension up to the nearest whole inch before calculating DIM weight. Previously, fractional inches were often dropped. Now, a package measuring 12.2" counts as 13". This calculator applies that rounding so your results match what the carrier will actually charge.
Girth is calculated as 2 × (width + height). It's combined with the longest dimension to determine Large Package and Oversize thresholds. A package with girth + longest side over 130" triggers a Large Package surcharge of $90–$160+. Over 165" triggers the Oversize fee, which can exceed $800.
Yes. Keep the longest side under 48", the second longest under 30", and actual weight under 50 lbs to avoid size- and weight-based Additional Handling. For the cubic threshold, keep volume under 10,368 in³ or ensure the package weighs at least 10 lbs. Use this calculator to test different dimensions before finalising your packaging.
Yes. Both carriers use the same key thresholds: Additional Handling at 48" longest / 30" second longest / 50 lbs, Large Package at 96" or girth + length > 130", and Oversize at 108" or girth + length > 165". Use the carrier toggle at the top of the calculator to switch between them.
